THE PRACTICAL GUIDE

How to reduce image size for an online form

Meet file limits without making your image unnecessarily small or blurry.

Check both requirements

A form may specify a maximum file size and minimum pixel dimensions. Read both before changing the image. A small file can still have the wrong dimensions, and an image with correct dimensions can exceed the upload limit.

Start with format and quality

Use JPEG for a photograph when the form allows it. Start near 80% quality, compare the result, then reduce quality further only if necessary. Use PNG when transparency or lossless text edges matter.

Use a target size carefully

The 50 KB, 100 KB and 200 KB tools search for a suitable JPEG quality and reduce dimensions if needed. The limit is treated as a maximum, not an exact byte count. Check the final dimensions before submitting. Keep the original in case you need a larger version later.
