72 DPI vs 300 DPI: What Actually Changes?
Understand when print resolution changes pixel count, when it only changes a label, and what an online form really needs.

Ask what is being held constant
The difference between 72 and 300 DPI depends on whether pixel dimensions or physical dimensions stay fixed. If the pixels are unchanged and only a resolution tag changes, the image contains the same visual information. If a tool holds a print size constant and generates pixels from DPI, the higher value produces a larger pixel grid. These two operations are often described with the same shorthand, which is why a DPI instruction can be confusing without its surrounding requirements.
Compare a concrete print example
A four-by-six-inch print at 300 pixels per inch uses 1200 × 1800 pixels. At 72 pixels per inch, the same physical size uses 288 × 432 pixels. The smaller grid has much less room for detail. This arithmetic is not a universal printing rule or a guarantee of quality: paper, viewing distance, printer settings and the original capture all matter. If your print service specifies a resolution and physical size, calculate both sides from those instructions.
Online forms usually inspect a digital file
A form that requires 300 × 400 pixels needs that grid, regardless of whether an image viewer labels it 72 or 300 DPI. Do not turn it into 900 × 1200 pixels simply to obtain a different resolution label. Read any explicit DPI instruction as well, but do not invent one from a generic photo preset. The destination may separately check file type and maximum bytes. Correct print metadata cannot compensate for failing those upload requirements.
Higher DPI cannot repair a weak source
If a small source is enlarged, new pixels are estimated from existing neighbors. The file can become larger without revealing additional true detail. Check focus and motion blur before resizing. Repeatedly enlarging and compressing the same image adds processing without replacing the missing information. When a print looks soft, inspect the original at full size and the effective pixels per inch before changing the number on an export dialog. A new, sharper capture may be necessary.
Avoid a second scaling step
Prepare the intended size once, then check the print dialog. Automatic scaling can override a correctly prepared photo, while borderless modes may enlarge or crop the page.
